Obituary for William Henry "Bill" Long

William H. “Bill” Long, 87, of Scottsbluff, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 25, 2021. His memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Friday October 29 at the First united Methodist Church in Scottsbluff, NE with Pastor Craig Collins officiating. The service will be livestreamed at firstumcsb.com/live. Please feel free to wear your red and white to honor this devoted Nebraska fan. A private family interment at Fairview Cemetery will precede the memorial service. Military honors will be provided by the Gering American Legion Post No. 36 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff. Online condolences may be left at www.bridgmanfuneralhome.com. Cremation was held at Bridgman Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Scottsbluff who is entrusted with arrangements.
William was born March 15, 1934, to Rex and Katherine (Goodwin) Long in Clinton, Iowa. He was a 1952 graduate of Clinton High School and 1959 graduate of the University of Iowa, BS in Marketing. Later in his career, he graduated from Chadron State College in Accounting.
He married Carolynn Hebeler on February 6, 1955. They soon moved to Germany where William served in the Army as a Finance Specialist 1955-1957. They next moved to Iowa City, Iowa to complete their degrees and then Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he worked for Nash Finch Company. Nash Finch transferred them to Scottsbluff in 1961. His employment career also included Associated Grocers, Panhandle Co-Op, and Ted B Miller company (his favorite job) retiring in 1996.
William was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff (Trustee, Finance Committee, and Usher), Scottsbluff Elks Life Member, and Scottsbluff evening Lions Club. He spent a lifetime active in the Boy Scouts of America: Eagle Scout, NESA (National Eagle Scout Association), Troup 21 Committee member, and 1985 WyoBraska District Committee Member of the Year.
William loved spending time watching Nebraska and Iowa sports, fishing, camping, traveling, wintering in Arizona, and furniture refinishing.
William is survived by his daughter Diana (Paul) Hugo of Spring Lake, MI; son Kenneth (Teresa) Long and grandchildren Noah and Maggie of Pocatello, ID; and brother Robert (Marolyn) Long of Corona, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Carolynn (Hebeler) Long.
