Obituary for Vernon Clarence Pedersen

Vernon Pedersen, 89, of Mesquite, TX, service will be on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 10 a.m. at the Federated Church in Mitchell, NE with burial to follow at Mitchell Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell, NE. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials may be made to your local veteran charities. Vernon was born in Hardy, Nebraska on October 22,1933 to Chris and Lillian Pedersen. He was raised northwest of Brownlee, NE. In 1942, he moved with his parents to a ranch south of Valentine, and later moved into Valentine in 1952 where he worked at Keeley Implements. Vernon Pedersen married Joy Sokol on July 19, 1953, in Valentine, NE. He entered the Army and served from 1953-1955, and then returned to Keeley’s for a total of 13 years. He and his family moved to Mitchell, NE in 1967. He worked with his father as a carpenter for 20 years building many houses in the Valley together. Vernon continued with his work for another 20+ years after his father retired. He was always available and willing to help anyone with their home repairs and remodeling. In 2015, Vernon and Joy made the move to Mesquite, TX where they could be close to their family.
Vernon belonged to the American Legion Post #124 and was Vice Commander for 6 years. He was also a member of the Federated Church and was on the Church board in Buildings & Grounds. Vernon had a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a helping hand especially around the church. Vernon never met a stranger and enjoyed playing a good card game in his free time. Vernon and Joy enjoyed camping at various state parks with friends and traveling to Texas to visit family during the holidays.
Vernon is survived by son Chris (Laura) Pedersen, daughter Beth (John) Lienemann, all from Terrell, TX; brother Lester Pedersen and sister Thelma Noland; five grandkids, Cassidy (Scott) Welty, Trinity (Scott) Coe, Shianne and (Charles) Wilson, Danielle and (Shawn) Jackson, Jacob (Crystal) Brown; four great-grandchildren, Landri and Kyler Welty, Hunter and Haizlee Jackson and one more great grandson coming in April.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy Pedersen; parents, Chris and Lillian Pedersen; and sisters, Elaine Larson and Dortha Bristol.
