Sal was a Christmas baby born on December 25th, 1928, in Kansas City, Kansas to Pascual Huerta and Manuela Herrera. At a young age his family decided to leave the closing meatpacking houses and the dwindling railroad jobs in Kansas City and head to the Mitchell Valley with the promise of making a living in agriculture. From the time he was just a boy, Sal worked hard alongside his father and siblings in the hot beet fields. Family and hard work was ingrained in him from a young age.
Sal was the fourth child in a family of 11 children, so there were always playmates to play with or to get into mischief with. Sal was especially fond of his older brother, Conrad, whom he always followed. He was always the sidekick. Sal loved his brother and only requested to be buried close to him.
Education was very important in the Huerta family so Sal was able to finish his schooling graduating from Mitchell High School in 1948. He married the love of his life, Helen Flores, on September 30, 1950. They recently celebrated their 72nd anniversary. Sal was drafted in December of 1950. He received his basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri and immediately deployed to the Korean War. He
served as an Infantryman with the 77th Infantry, Rifle Co. out of Fort Riley, Kansas. He fought on the 38th parallel and suffered through the cold, miserable conditions on the battle front. Sal was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. Sal returned home to his bride after he was discharged. They soon started their family with their three children, Bea, Gloria, and Sal Jr.
Sal loved cars and got into the auto repair and painting business. He got to display his artistic abilities through his auto painting, and Sal decided to start his own auto repair shop, Panhandle Auto Body, and worked there until his retirement. Sal and Helen retired to the Western Nebraska Veterans Home where he resided at his passing.
Sal is survived by his wife, Helen, daughters, Beatrice Reyes and husband Nick of Scottsbluff; Gloria Torres of Gillette, WY; son Salvador Huerta Jr. of Las Vegas, NV; and 9 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Pascual and Manuela Huerta, brothers Conrad, Jose, and Pascual Jr., sisters Connie McDowell, Teresa Ramirez, and Sister Pascualita, and two infant daughters, Cynthia and Bernice.
