Obituary for Raymond Stewart Cross Jr.

Raymond Stewart Cross, Jr., 87, of Minatare, went home to Heaven Sunday, April 2, 2023, in Scottsbluff.

Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell with Rev. Kyle Huckins officiating. Inurnment will follow at Mitchell City Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Raymond’s name.

Raymond was born November 30, 1935, in Gering to Raymond “Dick” Cross, Sr. and Josephine (Stewart) Cross. He attended school at Sunflower and Gering. Raymond was married to Selma Kirkpatrick and later to Janett Bivens.

Raymond spent his life helping others. He could ranch, farm, build, do cement work and overhaul engines. He retired from Pathfinder’s after 27 years as a ditch rider.

His biggest delight was children. Raymond loved them all and was dedicated to his canines, Smokey and Jet. He loved this John Deere tractor out in the hayfield.

He is survived by his sister, Gayle Weiss; children, Brenda Gray, Kirk Cross, Raylene (Carlin) Van Velson, Dean Cress and Rhonda, Richard (Camishia) Buckley, Heidi (Robert, Jr.) Kanniard; brother-in-law, Harry “Butch” (Candy) Bivens; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janett; grandsons, Justin and Robert Kanniard, III; son-in-law, John Gray; and brother-in-law, Marvin Weiss.
