Obituary for Myrna Kay Mitchell (James)
Myrna Kay Mitchell, 79, entered God’s Garden Tuesday, April 25, 2023, after a brave battle with Leukemia. Her funeral service will be 10 AM Friday, April 28, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Morrill with Reverend Kenneth L. Humphrey officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 PM, Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Jones Mortuary in Mitchell, NE. The family requests any memorial donations be made to the Church or to the Morrill Fire Department. Myrna was born April 7, 1944, to Myrtle (Nortness) and Carl Levi James at her grandmother James’ home in Scottsbluff, NE. She graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1962 and from Scottsbluff Beauty Academy in 1963. She received her certificate for Clerk Typist II in 1965.
She married Auston Casey at Trinity Lutheran Church in Norman, OK on May 19, 1965. She was blessed with one son, Robert.
Myrna married Bruce Mitchell on October 11, 1991, in Gering, NE. Witnesses to this union were Myrna’s sister, Donna Cozad and Bruce’s brother, Wayne Mitchell.
Myrna enjoyed hosting family dinners, surprise birthday parties and garden parties for the Mall Ladies. She loved decorating for the holidays and is well known for her flower arrangements. Her favorite activities were gardening and shopping at Garden Centers.
After retirement and moving to Morrill in 2007, Myrna joined Trinity Lutheran Church and Morrill Community Development Group. She helped with Welcome Wagon, volunteered at the Morrill Mall and was active in the Morrill Farmers Market from 2009 into 2015.
Myrna is survived by her husband Bruce; son Robert & wife Faith Casey; grandsons Terrence James, Justin Carl and Connor William Casey all of Blanchard, OK. She was blessed with four great grandchildren Keely, Kenton, Kinsley and Karley Casey all of Oklahoma; brother Merle James (Sharon), sisters Jan Sloop and Donna Cozad all of Morrill, NE; aunt LaVonne Nortness of Gering, NE; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Myrna was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother William; and her eldest brother Norman James.
