Obituary for John J Hardt

John J. Hardt, 87, of Scottsbluff, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at his home. His funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Garry Schick officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the church. It is respectfully requested that in lieu of any flowers, memorials in John’s honor be made in care of the church. John was born January 12, 1936, to John and Kathryn (Kramer) Hardt on a farm southeast of Melbeta, NE. He attended elementary schools in Gering, Melbeta and Creighton Valley Rural. He was a graduate of Melbeta High School, Scottsbluff Junior College, and Chadron State College. He did post graduate studies at Chadron State College and UNL-Kearney, majoring in Elementary Education and Administration.

John was united in marriage to Patricia A. Becker on August 7, 1960, in Scottsbluff, NE. Two children, Cheryl Ann, and Jon David blessed their union. John and Pat resided in Scottsbluff and Alliance.

John served in the field of education for 35 years. He taught school at Highland Rural, Haig Rural, Alliance City Schools, and Gering Public Schools. He was Principal of Gering’s McKinley Elementary for 20 years, retiring in 1995.

John proudly served his country for over 23 years, with service in the U.S. Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, and Nebraska Army National Guard.

John was a member of the Emmanuel Congregational Church.

John is survived by his wife Pat of Scottsbluff; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and David Clark of Platte City, MO; son and daughter-in-law Jon and Patti Hardt of Parker, CO; grandchildren Tatum and Abbi Hardt, Emily, and Josh Clark; sisters Dorothy Hinman of Morrill and Marlene Mckeown of Mitchell; sisters-in-law Shirley Becker and Pat Becker. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents; sister Sharon DeMott and infant sister Kathryn Ann Hardt, brother Melvin (Ken) and sister-in-law Harlene Hardt; brothers-in-law Norman DeMott, Richard McKeown, William Hinman, Larry Becker, Arthur Grasmick, Albert Becker and Elmer Cook and sisters-in-law Betty Grasmick and Virginia Cook.
