Obituary for Gregory Ray Jackson

Greg Jackson, 72, of rural Lyman, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. His funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at the Mitchell Berean Church with Pastor Jon Simpson officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Morrill. His visitation will be held on Friday, May 12, from 5-7pm at Jones Mortuary in Mitchell. It is respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Greg’s honor be made in care of the Wounded Warrior Project and Nebraska Game and Parks. Greg was born on September 8, 1950, in Scottsbluff, NE, to Raymond and Donna Faye Jackson. He grew up on a wheat farm south of Stegall. He attended Owl Creek Country School and then Morrill High, where he played football, basketball, track, and was a member of the rodeo team.
Greg met the love of his life, Kay Lempka, in high school and married on December 31, 1970. Greg was very patriotic and enlisted in the Navy in 1971 before attending the University of Nebraska in 1976, where he earned a BS degree in agronomy. Greg and Kay then moved to Imperial, Nebraska, where he worked as an agronomist. In 1983 Greg and his family moved back home to work with his dad on the family farm. During this time, he also worked for NRD and for Sampo International. Greg was extremely active in his local community as well. He served 19 years on the Wheatland School Board and coached his kids’ volleyball and basketball teams. He had a love for sports and refereed basketball and football for many years.
Greg was a faithful Christian who made the Word of God the center of his life. He was devoted to Christ and led by example. Greg could always be found studying the bible early in the morning. He was a member at Mitchell Berean Church where he enjoyed serving on the security team. He always looked forward to his weekly life group meetings and made lifelong friends. He loved to lead this group in music, singing, and playing the guitar.
Greg loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and hunting. His family made yearly trips to Merritt and Calamus Reservoirs where countless memories were made. His grandsons always looked forward to coming to Grandpa’s to kill their first deer. Greg loved spending time watching his grandkids in sports and would drive across the state to watch as many activities as possible.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Kay Jackson of Lyman; kids, Brett (Nicole) Jackson of Norfolk, Jen Jackson McCarter of Overton, Jason (Jenn) Jackson of Broken Bow, Josh Jackson of Lincoln, and Ben (Michelle) Jackson of Mitchell; mother, Donna Faye Jackson; sister, Kris (John) Ferguson of York; brother, Andy Jackson of Bozeman, Montana; Grandchildren, Brady, Nathan, Dylan, Brendan, Brooklyn, Madison, Ryan, Zachary, Makayla, Maleah and Addison.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Jackson; his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Jackson and Dianne Barnes; nieces, Lara Nichols and Jaci Barnes.
