Dorothy was born in Gering, NE on February 7, 1932 to John Schwabauer and Mollie Asmus. She was the first of four daughters. When she was young, the family moved to Michigan where she learned to ice skate. Later the family moved to Melbeta, NE and then to Minatare, NE where her mother died. Dorothy became like a mother to her two youngest sisters.
Dorothy married Marvin Hoffman on August 28, 1949 at the German Congregational Church in Minatare. She was a farm wife and mother living in the Lake Minatare, Highland and Lake Alice communities where she raised her three children. She loved doing puzzles with her children. This was an activity she enjoyed throughout her life.
Dorothy was an avid gardener and great cook. She was a wonderful seamstress. She made the bridal gown and bridesmaid dresses for her daughter’s wedding. She is also remembered for making cheerleader and square dance outfits. Dorothy also loved to crochet. All family members got an afghan and lots of pot holders.
In 1991, after her husband’s death, Dorothy moved off the farm to Scottsbluff where she lived until her death. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother (James), sister (Shirley Esrey), infant son (Robert) and her husband.
Survivors include her sisters Ruth Hanson of Riverside, CA and Delores (Marvin) Fries of Greeley, CO, brothers-in-law Ronald (Darlene) Hoffman of Mitchell, NE and Larry (Debbie) Steinbrecher of Kearney, NE, her children David (Cynthia) Hoffman of Gering, Kathy (Mike) Shafenberg and Dale Hoffman of Scottsbluff, six grandchildren Eric Hoffman, Adam (Jessica) Hoffman, Stacey (Denis) Bernal, Levi (Kari) Shafenberg, Megan (Josh) Betka, and Mason Hoffman, four great-grandchildren Diego and Daniel Bernal and Eleanor and Henry Shafenberg, nieces, nephews and other family members.
