Danny “Dan” James Murphy, 73, of Scottsbluff, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 surrounded by his wife and daughters. A celebration of Dan’s life will be held on Saturday, January 23rd at Weborg 21 Centre at 2:00 PM, in Gering.

Dan was born December 6, 1947 in Scottsbluff to Thomas “Tuck” and Goldie (Houk) Murphy. He attended St. Agnes Catholic School and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1965. After High School he worked as a service writer for Kizzire Chevrolet before joining the Scottsbluff Fire Department where he served for 25 years. After an injury from an anhydrous ammonia spill forced his retirement from the fire department in 1996, he went to work for the State of Nebraska as an IT technician covering all of the state offices in the panhandle. He loved traveling around to all of the state offices and meeting and serving the state staff. He retired from the state in 2011.

In 1967 he started dating the love of his life, Karen Dennon, and the two were married in 1971.

Dan was the kind of person who would come over and help you build a deck, rewire a light switch, work on your car, or anything you needed, and he knew how to do all of it. He was certainly a “jack of all trades.” His favorite job though was that of “Papa.” He adored spoiling his grandchildren, living by the motto that “he who dies with the most toys, wins.” His friends may now all concede his victory!

Dan is survived by his wife Karen, daughters Krystal (Steve Eich) Holten and Kathleen (Chris) Johnson, grandchildren Robby Simmons, Breckden Holten, Teyla Johnson and Parker Johnson, two sisters Tami (Larry) Engleman and Shannon Fenimore, brother Pat (Ann) Murphy, sister-in-law Pat Anderson, brother-in-law Garry Dennon, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

His parents, two brothers Tim and Tom, two sisters Colleen and Billye, nephew Brandon Dishong and niece Hallie Anderson preceded him in death.

Memorials can be sent to Firefighters Ministry. Online condolences may be made by visiting Dan’s memorial page at

My thoughts and prayers are with you Karen and your family. I enjoyed working with Dan for many years. Dan the Man!! When Dan and I would travel to different sites in the service area, the girls would always have a drawer where they kept candy for Dan when he would come to their office. He would always say Rushville isn't the end of earth, but you can see it from there. The many road trips we made to the sites, listening to Rush Limbaugh of coarse. I enjoyed listening to his stories. He could always make you laugh, always stay calm and be a good listener. I will miss him. He is truly one of the GOOD guys.

Dan's girls:
No words can express the sadness of this loss. He lived the best life any man could hope to and the love of, and for, his family is further proof of that. May the many wonderful memories sustain you through the days of grieving and beyond. He will always have a special place in my heart and his kindness will never be forgotten.

Much Love,
Angel Othling

Dear Karen, Krystal and Katherine,
You are in our thoughts and prays . We are sadden to learn of Dan's passing. My many memories of Dan go as far back as students at St. Agnes Catholic School. Dan and I were also classmates and graduated from SHS the same year. May special and cherished memories keep Dan close in your hearts and bring you peace. May he rest in peace.
In sympathy, Gene and Mari Schwarzkopf

Karen and Family,
Please accept our sympathy from the Class of 1965. Many of us went to grade school, St. Agnes Catholic School, and High School with Danny "Murph". He was a man of wit, many smiles and jokes, and had a blushing laugh. His demeanor was warm and knew no stranger. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He will be missed by all.

So many memories over the years that will never be forgotten. The pranks, the laughter-it always seemed you were laughing when you were around 'Murph' !! We are sincerely sorry for your loss.
